What is Detox?
Detox is a medically-managed process of removing physical dependency to alcohol or drugs, so that you can undergo your psychological rehabilitation without addictive substances in your system. Detox programmes should always be prescribed and monitored by a CQC-registered medical professional, and they can be conducted either in the community as a home detox, or through a residential detox programme where you stay in a hospital or clinic.
At Help Me Stop, we support our clients who need a detox by assessing very carefully your alcohol treatment or drug treatment needs. If a home detox programme is safe and suitable for you to stop drinking alcohol or taking drugs, we can arrange that for you before you begin your Dayhab programme that treats your psychological dependence.

Detox from alcohol
If you’re not sure whether or not you need an alcohol detox, please contact us today before you stop drinking alcohol. Our experienced assessors will book you in for an assessment, which is a meeting of approximately one hour that allows us to identify how best we can support you to stop drinking, and stay stopped. There is no charge for this initial alcohol treatment assessment, and we then provide our tailored recommendations for alcohol detox and rehab to you, including all costs.
Whether or not you need a detox for physical dependence varies from person to person, but with alcohol, typically if you are a woman and you’re drinking 10 or more units per day, or if you’re a man and you’re drinking 15 or more units a day, there will usually be some degree of physical dependence to alcohol. This means you will experience physical withdrawal symptoms if you try to stop drinking suddenly without help. For this reason, we always recommend that you seek help before you stop drinking alcohol. It can be dangerous or life-threatening to stop alcohol suddenly, without medical supervision.
A medically-assisted detox involves a short course of prescribed medication that allows you to stop drinking safely and quickly. Most of our clients report little to no side effects during a detox, and they can commence their alcohol rehab programme within days. Subject to how you are feeling, you can begin the Help Me Stop intensive rehab programme on day three or four of your detox from alcohol, which gives you the most supportive framework to begin your recovery.

How Help Me Stop can help
As the first step of your treatment process, we can arrange a detox programme with our trusted clinical partners for clients who are physically dependent on alcohol or drugs.. This will help you stop alcohol or drugs safely, including if you are coming off multiple substances. As the physical detoxification is just about stopping safely, you will also need a rehab programme to stay stopped. This combination of treatment for your body and mind gives you the best chance of sustaining your recovery. For this reason, Help Me Stop does not offer alcohol detox or drug detox by itself, only in combination with intensive rehab.
To treat the psychological addiction, we offer an intensive Dayhab model throughout all our programmes, meaning that they are non-residential, more accessible and more affordable than residential rehab. For clients who need a detox, we offer detox together with our face-to-face or online rehab programme. This package of care ensures clients have intensive support with their physical withdrawal process, as well as the specialist therapy they need to overcome cravings to drink alcohol or take drugs.
A detox may or may not be needed to support you through the first phase of recovery, and to help you stop using safely. You don’t need to work this out by yourself. Get in touch with Help Me Stop to book your assessment. We need approximately one hour together, where we ask a series of questions and talk in confidence about what’s been going on. Then, we can recommend whether or not you need a detox before starting our rehab programme. Beyond your detox and our six week rehab programme, we also offer three months of free aftercare.
Your alcohol detox
If you are physically addicted to alcohol or drugs, you will experience mild to severe withdrawal symptoms if you stop without medical support. In the most serious cases, stopping alcohol or drugs suddenly without medical support can be fatal. For this reason, it is vital to get a full alcohol or drug treatment assessment from us, or from a qualified health professional, before you stop drinking or taking drugs. A tailored plan for your care can then be put in place, which you can start within 24 to 72 hours.
Your detox is designed to stop using drugs and alcohol safely, without putting your body into physical withdrawal symptoms such as sweating, shaking, vomiting, or even hallucinations, fits or seizures. The short course of medication you are prescribed effectively blocks these withdrawal symptoms, as your body adjusts over several days or weeks to having no alcohol or drugs in the system. Detox protocols are prescribed and monitored by a CQC-registered medical professional, and can be carried out either as a home detox or in a residential setting depending on your own needs and circumstances. A home detox with our rehab programme is the most cost-effective treatment plan. In cases where a residential detox is needed before our rehab programme, we will recommend the most affordable options, without compromising quality or care.

At Help Me Stop, we can arrange a home detox programme for you that will support you to stop drinking alcohol or taking drugs. For people who are physically addicted to alcohol, or drugs like opiates or opioids, a detox is the first step towards your recovery.
We offer support to adults, aged 18 and above. Most detoxes can be managed within the community, where you live at home throughout your medically managed detox programme. This is subject to very clear criteria, to ensure your safety. This will be assessed with a member of our team. If a residential detox is required or preferred, we can arrange this, and we will share details and costs promptly following your assessment.
Drug and alcohol support and advice
It’s important to understand that an alcohol detox or drug detox is just the first step. The detox will safely treat your physical dependence, but it won’t treat your psychological addiction. For this reason, Help Me Stop only offers detox in combination with our 6-week rehab programme.
Our treatment programme centres around integrative psychotherapy, which blends a number of evidence-based therapies, including the 12 step approach to addiction treatment, person-centred therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, family therapy, art therapy, recovery workshops, mindfulness, and more. We work mainly in group sessions, and every client also has a one-to-one counselling session each week with their focal counsellor.
We can treat alcohol addiction and drug addiction, in our physical locations in London and Hampshire, and in our online rehab programme that serves clients nationwide and overseas. If you would like to find out more about how we can help, you can call us or email us for a confidential chat. Together, we can help you stop alcohol or drugs for good.
